Who is School Works?

School Works is an independent, not-for-profit limited company.

We work in collaboration with a range of partners, including the DfES, Demos, the New Economics Foundation and the DTI movement for Innovation.

School Works is core funded by the Department for Education and Skills, and has received support from CABE (Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment), the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, NESTA (National Endowment for Science Technology and the Arts), Ecophon and the CITB (Construction Industry Training Board.)

School Works was selected for the BT Vision 100 index 2002, which identifies 100 innovative UK organisations that have achieved strategic goals through visionary activities.

The School Works Team

Ty Goddard, Managing Director

Ty GoddardEducation specialist Ty Goddard has been appointed as the new managing director of School Works.

Formerly strategic manager for Brighton and Hove Council's 'Schools in the Community' programme, he took up the post on December 8, with a launch at the RSA.

In taking up the position Ty said:

"With the Government's commitment to rebuild or renew every secondary school in England, local education authorities across the country have the chance to develop plans for their schools that meet the challenges and opportunities of diverse communities for generations to come'. 'And with the increasing use of all schools as a community resource, it's crucial they get it right."

"The job now is to get out there and work alongside architects, construction firms, local education authorities and teachers to show what School Works can do for them, and demonstrate how we can help improve the educational experiences of our children".

Prior to working at Brighton and Hove Council, Ty's career has covered a wide range of work in policy research, lobbying and politics. This includes posts as national campaigns co-ordinator for Scope, political lobbyist for the NSPCC and three years as lead councillor for education at the London Borough of Lambeth. Ty has also worked as an advisor on extended schools to the Department for Education and Skills.

 

Hugh Dames, Projects Manager, School Works

Hugh DamesHugh commenced work as Projects Manager with School Works in June 2003 with primary responsibility for the planning, implementation and management of DfES funded national demonstration projects for stakeholder participation in school design. Hugh' s background is predominately within private sector construction and estates management but he was most recently contracted to the Schools Branch of the Scottish Executive working on school estate management and design policy.

Educated at Flinders University of South Australia and Macquarie University of New South Wales, Hugh has a M.A. in International Communications.

 

Sarah Hill, Projects Officer / Researcher

Sarah HillSarah is the School Works Company Secretary. She has also been researching issues surrounding the School Works process and school building design whilst being responsible for ensuring the efficient implementation of special projects, seminars, events and administration of the website. She is also collating examples of best practice.

Sarah graduated from the Bartlett School of Graduate Studies, with an MSc in 'The Built Environment: Light and Lighting'. She has a strong interest in lighting for schools, and has worked as a lighting designer in two schools, as well as in various London theatres and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Sarah is on the governing body of Guy's Evelina Hospital School.

Ronan Leyden, Projects Assistant, School Works

Ronan LeydenRonan joined the team mid-June 2003. He is working on the efficient administration of the school works office and website. He also provides support for planning and implementation of demonstration site projects, seminars and events. He recently graduated from Leeds University, where he studied Physics and Philosophy.

He previously worked for Leeds City Council's Planning and Regeneration Dept.

His outside interests include youth development and he currently helps to run weekly sessions for the 'Woodcraft Folk', an educational youth movement.

 

Beth Gladstone, Project Manager, School Works

Beth GladstoneBeth joined the team in April 2005 to run School Works participatory processes, particularly for Local Education Authorities involved in BSF, and to develop the organisation's consultancy services. Her background includes teaching, project management in the public sector and regeneration consultancy.

She graduated from the University of Nottingham with a BA in Hispanic Studies and has spent three years working in Granada and Barcelona.

 

Sharon Wright, Associate

Previously School Works Managing Director, Sharon remains an active associate of the School Works network.

Sharon WrightShe is a member of the DfES Advisory Group on School Building Design and the Exemplar Design Working Group.

Prior to joining School Works, Sharon was a Fellow in Organisational Development with OPM. She started her career in the Civil Service, spending 12 years in employment and education policy. Prior to leaving she was with the DfES Standards and Effectiveness Unit where she was responsible for school improvement issues and sharing good practice.

Sharon is an LEA-appointed additional governor of a London primary school which has just come out of special measures, and is Chair of the school's Curriculum Committee. She has a first degree from Queen's University Belfast, an Masters from Birkbeck College, London and is currently undertaking a Doctorate in Education at King's College, London.
