Who is School Works?

School Works is an independent, not-for-profit limited company.

We work in collaboration with a range of partners, including the DfES, Demos, the New Economics Foundation and the DTI movement for Innovation.

School Works is core funded by the Department for Education and Skills, and has received support from CABE (Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment), the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, NESTA (National Endowment for Science Technology and the Arts), Ecophon and the CITB (Construction Industry Training Board.)

School Works was selected for the BT Vision 100 index 2002, which identifies 100 innovative UK organisations that have achieved strategic goals through visionary activities.

Ty Goddard, Managing Director

Ty Goddard

Ty Goddard was appointed Managing Director of School Works in Dec 2004.

Ty Goddard previously worked as Brighton and Hove City Council’s Schools in the Community Strategic Manager, also acting as an advisor to the DfES on Extended Schools and co-location of services. He continues to be involved in the development of Falmer High School as Brighton and Hove’s first Full Service School.

In 1998 Ty was elected to Lambeth Council and became Chair of Education, later combining this role with a lead on Social Services. In two inspections, OFSTED remarked that there had been steady improvements in the Local Education Authority. Major Primary and SEN reorganisation in the Borough ensured that new schools have been built, including Jubilee School which was short listed for a Prime Minister’s Award. A City Academy was opened in September 2004.

Ty has worked as the UK and European political advisor for the NSPCC, lobbying around child protection issues, particularly during the passage of the Sex Offenders Bill. He also worked as the National Campaigns Co-ordinator for Scope.

Ty has spoken at national conferences for a range of bodies including the DfES, RIBA, Building Design, 4Children, Sure Start, and BURA.

Hugh Dames, Projects Manager, School Works

Hugh DamesHugh commenced work as Projects Manager with School Works in June 2003 with primary responsibility for the planning, implementation and management of DfES funded national demonstration projects for stakeholder participation in school design. Hugh' s background is predominately within private sector construction and estates management but he was most recently contracted to the Schools Branch of the Scottish Executive working on school estate management and design policy.

Educated at Flinders University of South Australia and Macquarie University of New South Wales, Hugh has a M.A. in International Communications.

 

Sarah Hill, Publications and Research Manager, School Works

Sarah HillSarah is Publications and Research Manager and School Works Company Secretary. She has been researching issues surrounding the School Works process and school building design and is responsible for the research and production of School Works resources.

She graduated from the Bartlett School of Graduate Studies, with an MSc in 'The Built Environment'. She has a strong interest in lighting for schools, and has worked as a lighting designer in various London theatres and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Ronan Leyden, Projects and Communications Coordinator, School Works

Ronan LeydenRonan joined the team June 2003, coming from Planning and Regeneration at Leeds City Council, to support the planning and implementing of the School Works DfES national demonstration site projects, whilst redeveloping the website and ensuring the efficient running of the office. He now runs the seminar series and website and co-ordinates the effective communication of School Works events and activities.

His outside interest includes youth development and has been helping to run weekly sessions for the 'Woodcraft Folk', an educational youth movement. Ronan has a Bsc in Physics and Philosophy from the University of Leeds.

Beth Gladstone, Project Manager, School Works

Beth GladstoneBeth joined the team in April 2005 to run School Works participatory processes, particularly for Local Education Authorities involved in BSF, and to develop the organisation's consultancy services. Her background includes teaching, project management in the public sector and regeneration consultancy.

She graduated from the University of Nottingham with a BA in Hispanic Studies and has spent three years working in Granada and Barcelona.

 

Sharon Wright, Associate

Previously School Works Managing Director, Sharon remains an active associate of the School Works network.

Sharon WrightShe is a member of the DfES Advisory Group on School Building Design and the Exemplar Design Working Group.

Prior to joining School Works, Sharon was a Fellow in Organisational Development with OPM. She started her career in the Civil Service, spending 12 years in employment and education policy. Prior to leaving she was with the DfES Standards and Effectiveness Unit where she was responsible for school improvement issues and sharing good practice.

Sharon is an LEA-appointed additional governor of a London primary school which has just come out of special measures, and is Chair of the school's Curriculum Committee. She has a first degree from Queen's University Belfast, an Masters from Birkbeck College, London and is currently undertaking a Doctorate in Education at King’s College, London.
