HELLERUP SCHOOL, COPENHAGEN, DENMARK
KNUD NORDENTOFT (H)
Largely open plan with a stunning series of wooden central staircases
that double as seating and performance spaces, Hellerup has been
created for pupils of 6-16 years of age. A number of “home
bases” complete with kitchen areas and chill-out spaces form
relaxed learning environments where students follow a project based
curriculum.
ACADEMY OF ST FRANCIS OF ASSISI, LIVERPOOL
STEVE MCELROY (VP)
A new joint faith Academy specialising in the environment and
equipped with a state-of-the art ICT system including a virtual
teaching and learning environment and CC3, a network system designed
specifically for schools. The Academy’s building utilises
solar energy for hot water heating and rainwater harvesting for
re-use in sanitary appliances.

COWGATE NURSERY SCHOOL, EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND
LYNN MCNAIR (H)
ALLAN MURRAY (A)
Situated in a tight site in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old
Town, the bold design of this 60 place nursery provides a spatially
exciting environment for the teaching and development of young
children and exploits existing level changes across the site to
provide creative play features.
HAMPDEN GURNEY PRIMARY SCHOOL, LONDON
TONY MCGUIRK (A)
Funded by the creation of a housing development on the old school's
playground, a ‘vertical school’ provides an exciting
solution to a tight urban site. The space has been replaced by
six open-air play decks providing safe weather-proof play and territory
adjacent to classrooms on each level, with the children ‘ growing
up’ the school.

SEMINAR 9
DARLINGTON EDUCATIONAL VILLAGE
DAME DELA SMITH
This pioneering Education Village is rethinking the concept of
school. Opened in April this year it combines a secondary, a primary
and a special school catering for 1400 pupils from nursery age
through to adulthood. Workforce remodelling is high on the agenda
as three schools, children’s services and para-professionals
are brought together under one roof.
VOLKSSCHULE NATORPGASSE VIENNA, AUSTRIA
ANDREAS TREUSCH (A)
A striking renovation of a primary school set in an inner city
site. this school shows How to re-design and revitalise a protected
building for a modern age. The extension of the building is integrated
in the urban space by creating a new, independent and contained
structure, seemingly floating on top of the existing building.
SEMINAR 10
LEARNING THROUGH LANDSCAPES
MARY JACKSON
Whilst school grounds make up a large proportion of the school
estate they are rarely prioritised by designers. Drawing on examples
of school grounds in the UK, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand
and the USA this seminar will examine the importance of this environment,
its potential for learning and play and current trends in design.
COMMUNITY REGENERATION
SIR COLIN STANSFIELD SMITH (A)
This seminar will examine the role that schools can play in the
regeneration of their communities, looking at particular examples
